Description
Samobor is a medieval town of Baroque architecture located on the eastern slopes of the Samobor Highlands at the entrance to the romantic Gradne Creek Valley. Just twenty kilometers from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
Samobor bridges are a trademark of the city and a recognizable detail in the photographs. Due to the need to quickly cross from one side of the river to the other through the centuries, the inhabitants of Samobor built bridges. The oldest is probably the one in the main town square. There is also the oldest core of the city dating from past centuries, so it can be assumed that in this place in the earliest days of the city there was a bridge that connected its shores. Samobor was a fair, trade and craft place that needed good communication within the city and those to other surrounding villages and nearby Zagreb. And without a bridge there is no good communication across the river. From its very foundation, Samobor had a bridge over the Gradna, of course wooden structures, such as those built in the Middle Ages for the needs of ox-carts, carriages, horsemen and pedestrians.
Today, several bridges cross the Gradna in Samobor. There are a dozen of them in the center of the city, some of which are just for pedestrians and cyclists. The timber is decorated with appropriate ornaments and protected from the weather. They date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
